I doubt proof of stake validating will ever be a mainstream activity.
This is different from simply using the network – which definitely should be doable from any device.
Will definitely move to phone at some point. I was playing around with one of the test net and the dev team talks about making the clients light enough to run on a smart fridge.
Its not about running a client – of course those will eventually be very widely available on all kinds of devices.
This is about running a validator securing (at least) $10k worth of ETH on those devices, keeping the device and your private keys secure, and validating transactions on the network. Those aren't activities for the mainstream's smart fridge to be doing.
Validating literally requires a computer of some sort, it isn't particularly suppose to be the "mainstream" side of crypto. While yes everyone can do it if they choose it will mostly be more tech savy / investor type people that get into it.
Dapps and using crypto on the day to day is what needs to be mainstream that is where you should worry about a mobile version being available the most.
Why does validating need a computer? Especially when iPhones are more powerful then most laptops. It’s not POW but POS which doesn’t require intensive gpu/cpu power… so shouldn’t it work on a phone.
Also a phone is constantly connected to a network regardless of location (in most cases) and only off when the phones turned off. Which hardly anyone turns their phone off now days (I think).
Validators need to be 24/7, as there's essentially a penalty for down time.
You can use Ethereum without expecting to stake from your phone.
You can that’s true. But what about those of use that have 20+ eth and want to stake. But we are not able to due to living in areas without WiFi or internet. I get internet by utilizing my phones hotspot. Which disconnects whenever I turn the other way.
It would make it more accessible to less connected areas of the world to make it possible to state from a mobile platform. IMO anyways.
check out rocket pool. I think that would be an option for people who cant run a reliable node.
Using a phone as a validator will come later. At this time it is not a priority.
I believe if it was now. It would have more adoption. Just like the gods unchained game. It only runs on pc. If it was mobile. Imagine how many people would be playing it compared to having to play at a computer
Honestly its not a priority because its not really required. The requirements for pc are pretty low. You need to have 32 to run a validator anyways. So if you want to stake outside of a pool you need to have 32 ETH, which means you can probably afford a node. A validator is not anything like a pc game.
It’s not about affording a node. It’s a matter of connectivity. I have cellphone data here. But the area has not internet as far as dsl or anything. Unless you get sat internet.
You probably wouldn't want to run a node then. Probably not profitable running a node on a cell signal only or on a unreliable internet connection. Not to mention, do you have unlimited internet phone plans at decent speeds? You can get a cell stick on a plan for fairly cheap and plug that into a laptop. Or run a Hotspot on a phone and connect the laptop to that. Having a node run on your phone is the least of your worries in the situation you've outlined.
It's tesnet check again in few months
