Shhhhhh!!!! Some of us are hoping the squatters forgot.
Whats the benefit or intended purpose of a .eth?
It allows you to have a human readable alias for an ethereum address. I.e. 0xab547c3999… points to skollieboer.eth
Very similar in concept to web URLs and IP addresses.
Ah thank you.
Check Unstoppable Domains
Yea, love the fact that I don’t have to worry about .crypto renewals
You also don't with .eth names if you pay ahead. Having registration fees scale to how long you own it gives you the option of paying less if youre not sure you want to keep it forever. It also discourages squatting (holding a name indefinitely without actually using it). Names being released soon is a good thing, because it frees them up to be used by someone else, rather than being locked forever by people who aren't using them.
Yep! Just note that ENS names can store any cryptocurrency address, can point to decentralized (e.g. IPFS) websites, and can ultimately store any information. See ens.domains for more
Are there any ENS competitors?
There are several blockchain domain registries but Unstoppable Domains is the only other major one building on Ethereum.
Yes but ENS has an order of magnitude more integrations more than the next biggest.
I feel a tilt of centralization here
Handshake/Namebase is working on a similar idea, but one level up (Handshake replaces the root in the DNS system, not just one TLD in the system)
ENS isn't "just one TLD in the system" but is integrating the DNS namespace.
📣 If you registered a .ETH name in the early days before May 2019 📣
Grace period will end in 1 wk on Aug 2 which means names will be released for others to register. If you'd like to keep your name, you must renew it!

sounds like breach of contract (then again, code is law) but anyway there should be an alternative that doesn't have a surprise fee of $640/year (which isn't even burned). aside from being a natural monopoly, though, they're in with the ethereum foundation so there's no real ability to outcompete them
If I won't renew it the eth will be sent back to my address?
If you're talking about your deposit from the old deposit system, you have to claim your deposit. Search for the name at app.ens.domains and it'll give you the option to claim the deposit back if it's your name.
How do I figure out how much I have deposited for my each of my ens names? I found my ens transactions on etherscan but don't know how to distinguish between them. Some I bought cheap, some cost me 1 eth. I would like to retrieve my 1 names but keep the cheap ones.
how do i buy a ENS? .eth address. thanks!
Go to app.ens.domains in a web3 browser (e.g. Chrome with MetaMask) and search for a name you'd like to see if it's available
True, I over-simplified. ENS started with one TLD, and now has a few, and is expanding to more, but from what I understand their end goal is not replacing the whole DNS system, but working within it? Where Handshake replaces the root certificate, so it's end goal is to be the thing that replaces the current DNS system?
Ick, I’ve been away from this a long time. I see guides on how to return or renew with metamask, but what if the addresses are assigned to a ledger wallet address?
