Beyond Phase 0? (self.ethereum). 6 . . . celticwarrior72

I think that we all expect that Phase 0 will launch some time around the end of the year, and probably (fingers crossed) go pretty well.

For Phase 1 to launch, what research items need to be completed? Are there any obvious gaps remaining to be closed, or has most of the work been done?

I would say there's no unfinished research required for phase 1; it's all spec optimization and development. I've been actively pushing for some client team to start development of phase 1 ASAP so we can start to get a better understanding of how phase 1 works in practice.

The spec in phase 1 is actually quite simple IMO, at least conceptually; most of the hard phase 1-related things are already done in phase 0. The main technical risk in phase 1, from my perspective, is that sharded p2p networks have never been done in this way before, and so we risk unknown unknowns on the networking side. That said, we are using sharded p2p networks already in a more limited capacity for attestation broadcasting, so we'll get some derisking of the tech in that way too.

My main research concern is that it would be really nice if we can get an eth2 light client inside eth1 (or a bridge) at the same time as phase 1, as that way phase 1 becomes useful for rollups based on the eth1 chain, providing us the promised 100000 TPS scalability; the exact details of how this will be done still need a lot of work.

I understand it's early days, however everyone seems excited about layer 2s yet they don't use them.

Can you explain what would happen in a circumstance where layer 2s are never widely adopted by the community?

The dev teams try not to give dates, because people get mad when they get missed. But, they have said that most of the hard stuff is in Phase 0, and that much of the research for phase 1 and 1.5 is done. Once we get past phase 0, and things get coded, then they can start to test their theories on an actual system, we will know more.

My gut, based on comments by Vitalik and other devs, is that phase 1 should go live in 2021, and nobody is guessing beyond that.

If it does in 2021, is it going to happen somewhere in the middle or by the end of the year?

Nobody really knows. This is stuff that has no precedent, so there is not really a good way to guess. Having said that, if I had to guess, based on the pace of progress over the last couple of years, and Phase 0 not til November, it seems late in the year is the most likely result.

You must have just walked through the door and entered this sub… Many still have doubts that it will be launched EOY, and a few even claim it will never be launched. I'm definitely not in that boat, but until we have a firm launch date and a successful final testnet, I won't count all my chickens just yet.

Those people must not be using the test net because it is swimming along smoothly. My validator has been running with 100% uptime for over a month with zero issue.

All very encouraging signs, I'll admit.

At this point, and with the success of the testnets, it is ridiculous for the “few” to think it will never launch.

The developers are targeting Nov launch

Nov launch

Hmm… Well, I will apologize for ever doubting them, if they manage to hit that target.

That's very ambitious though, imo.

Well the official multiclient testnet is set to launch on 4th of August and run for 3 months
